Avery Creek: A very popular spot for
wild rainbows is along U.S. 276. Highway 276
accesses Avery Creek by turning onto FS 477.
Coming from Brevard, FS 477 is the first
gravel road on the right after passing the
Pisgah Ranger Station on Highway 276. This
stream is not heavily fished mainly due to
the fact that it’s a bit tough getting to it
but the effort can be quite rewarding.

Carter Creek: This is a small stream
which can be reached by Craggy Gardens Road
or the Blue Ridge Parkway and is a great
location but is recommended for anglers well
versed in fishing in tight spaces.

Davidson River: Orvis ranks this as
one of the top 100 trout streams in the
country. Located west of Brevard, N.C., this
river is a very popular spot. Due to this
fact, even experienced anglers may have
trouble catching fish. The trout in the
Davidson are not easily fooled as they have
become very accustomed to foiling the best
efforts of even the best fishermen. If you
are skilled enough to catch of these trout,
it very well could be a trophy fish. There
is a fly-fishing only section. Catch and
Release. |

Looking Glass Creek: This is a great
area for the angler going for wild rainbows.
The famous Looking Glass Falls is located
right off of U.S. 276. From Brevard, take
U.S. 276 north, about 5 miles past the
entrance to Pisgah National Forest. The
falls will be on your right. Tough going
keeps down the traffic to this stream.

North Fork-French Broad River: This
stream features some very big trout which
tend to hide in the deeper pools. Accessible
from Hwy 215, this is a pretty rugged and
steep area but well worth the slog. This is
a wild trout/natural bait regulated stream.
Anglers must use either artificial lures or
natural bait on a single hook. As with all
wild trout streams, there is a four fish
limit and they must be at least 7 inches.

South Mills River: One the best
streams in the county for wild trout, South
Mills River is accessible near the Cradle of
Forestry or off of Hwy. 280. Well over 10
miles of the river are fishable in between
those two points of access either by hiking
the adjacent South Mills River trail or
walking the river itself. Due to the
strenuous nature of this stream, it is not
heavily fished and as a result, there have
been some monster brown trout taken here.
These big browns tend to lurk in the deeper
pools while rainbows are generally taken in
the swift moving water. |
