Big Laurel Creek: Wild and hatchery
supported trout are in abundance where this
popular waterway meets the North Fork near
Hwy 88.The entire creek runs about 9 miles
to the state line.

Chinquapin Lake: Located in Ashe
County, this mad-made lake is owned and
maintained by the Ashe County Wildlife Club
and stocked by the North Carolina Wildlife
Resources Commission under Delayed Harvest
regulations. Brook, brown and rainbow trout
are abundant and may only be fished using
artificial lures having one hook. No fish
may be possessed from October first until
the first Saturday in June. Between the
first Saturday in June and September 30th
there is no lure restriction and anglers are
subject to a seven fish creel limit.
Chinquapin Lake is near Jefferson, North
Carolina. From Jefferson, NC take NC Hwy 88
East approximately 10 miles then take a left
at the Upper Mountain Agricultural Research
Station on Big Peak Creek Rd. Go four miles
on the gravel road until the pavement
begins. The entrance to Chinquapin Lake is
the first road on the right.
This is an ideal spot for the entire family
and it is also accessible to handicapped
persons. There is a shooting range nearby so
don’t be shocked if you happen to hear
gunfire at times but have no fear…the fish
are used to the noise and it doesn’t hamper
the fishing.
Cranberry Creek: A local favorite,
this is a nice large creek which is hatchery
supported from the Alleghany county line
across Hwy. 88 traveling twelve miles to the
South Fork of the New River at the Hwy. 221
bridge.

Helton Creek: Managed under delayed
harvest regulations, this very popular
stream offers 11 miles of fishing on the New
River all the way to the Virginia state
line. Just south of the state line is a
stretch running along Hwy. 194 which is
teeming with wild trout.

Three Top Creek: Ten miles of

good number of wild trout as well. Some

Old Fields Creek: Hwy 221 south out of

Indian Lake Dr. 2000 ft. on the left side of

is roughly 2000 feet on the left. Hatchery

Gap Road. Go approx. 1000 ft to fork in the
road. Take the left fork onto Dick Phillips
